Food Waste Logger

Food Waste Logger is a smart bin that records the amount of food waste generated by the user. When a certain threshold of food waste, such as 1kg, is reached, the bin emits a beep sound and displays a reminder message to the user. The aim of this prototype is to raise public awareness about the significant volume of food waste produced and encourage people to reduce it. The prototype also includes gamification features, such as displaying rankings of users who have generated the least amount of food waste, to incentivize users and motivate them to take action in reducing their food waste. The project has the potential to bring about behavioral changes by educating users about their habits and the consequences of their actions, and providing positive reinforcement for sustainable behaviors.

My Role

UX Researcher, Designer

Design Brief

You are required to produce a concept design for a new data-driven technology for the home. The digital technology must capture, log and/or use data about activity in the home. It must be used to promote more environmentally sustainable behaviour. You must create a prototype of the concept idea. Your prototype can be of any level of fidelity that you wish but must be 3-dimensional and be presented sufficiently to convey the concept, using any materials you have at hand or can easily acquire. This may include the micro:bit, but this is not a requirement.

My Response To Brief

After reviewing the brief, I researched different unsustainable behaviours in households such as energy waste, improper waste management, water waste, single-use items, and food waste. As someone who is personally concerned about the issue of food waste, I have decided to focus on addressing the issue of food waste management.
